What it is
Unstructured time is any part of the day without a lesson: breaks, lunch, changing rooms, corridors, the journey in.
Where it applies
Any pupil, and disproportionately those with SEND, anxiety or social communication difficulty.
How it works
Support is usually timetabled to lessons, so the hardest parts of the day often have none. Incidents, exclusions and school refusal cluster here.\n\nProvision at unstructured times can be written into Section F like any other provision.
What you can ask for
Ask what happens at break and lunch specifically, and what is supervised.
Ask for a named place to go and a named adult, and for it to be in writing rather than an informal arrangement that lapses when staff change.
If there is an EHCP, ask for unstructured-time support to be specified and quantified in Section F. It rarely is unless asked for.
