Setting is the time, place and social environment of a text.
Where it applies
Literature and Language, and it carries thematic weight in most set texts.
How it works
Setting establishes atmosphere, constrains what characters can do, and often carries symbolism. A story about ambition set in a rigid class system is a different story set anywhere else.
How to use it in your work
Treat setting as an active element, not scenery. Ask what the setting makes possible and what it makes impossible.
Connect it to context — a Victorian London street and a 1980s Liverpool estate both carry the history their readers know.
