Writing a conclusion
Saying what the results show, with the data, and how confident you can be.
Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.
What it is
A conclusion states what the data shows in relation to the hypothesis, supported by specific figures, with an evaluation of how much confidence the method supports.
Where it applies
All three sciences, geography fieldwork and psychology.
How it works
A conclusion is not a summary of what you did. It answers the question, quotes the evidence, and says what the limitations mean for how much you can claim.
How to use it in your work
Quote actual figures from your results. "The rate increased" is worth less than "the rate doubled from 10 to 20 seconds".
Refer back to the hypothesis explicitly and say whether it is supported.
End with one honest limitation and its effect on confidence. That sentence is often the difference between bands.
Never claim more than the data supports. Correlation is not causation, and one experiment is not proof.
Where to get help
Your teacher and your board's specification. Bitesize for worked examples, and the subject song for the topic list.
