School trips

Educational visits, what they can charge for, and the duty to include disabled pupils.

What it is

Visits away from the school site, from a local walk to a residential abroad.

All schools. Charging is governed by law and inclusion by the Equality Act.

How it works

Schools cannot charge for activities during school hours that are part of the curriculum, but may ask for voluntary contributions — and must make clear no child will be excluded for not contributing. Residential trips have separate rules on board and lodging.

Risk assessments are required, and reasonable adjustments must be made so disabled pupils can take part.

What you can ask for

Ask what adjustments will be made so your child can go, rather than accepting that they cannot. Refusing a place because of a disability, without considering adjustments, may be discrimination.

Ask whether the contribution is voluntary — if it is, say so and ask that your child is included regardless.

Ask for the risk assessment where a medical condition is involved, and for the individual healthcare plan to travel with the group.
