Neurodevelopmental assessment
The NHS pathway to an autism or ADHD diagnosis. Long, and not a precondition for support.
Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If a decision is going against you, get advice from one of the free services we link to before you agree to anything or miss a deadline. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.
What it is
A neurodevelopmental assessment is the multi-disciplinary process leading to a diagnosis of autism, ADHD or a related condition. It typically involves questionnaires, school observation, developmental history and a clinical assessment.
Where it applies
Children and young people referred through a GP, paediatrician or school.
How it works
NICE guidance sets out what an assessment should involve and expects it to begin within a defined period of referral. In practice waits of two years or more are common in many areas.
The Right to Choose route allows referral to an alternative provider in some circumstances, which some families use to shorten waits.
What you can ask for
Ask the school to put support in NOW. A diagnosis is not required for SEN support, for reasonable adjustments or for an EHC needs assessment, and waiting for one costs years.
Ask where you are on the waiting list and what the current wait is, in writing.
Ask about Right to Choose if the local wait is very long.
Where to get help
Your GP, and the National Autistic Society and ADHD UK for what to expect. SENDIASS on getting support without a diagnosis.
