What it is
Genre is a category of text with shared conventions — tragedy, comedy, Gothic, dystopia, bildungsroman (a novel of growing up), detective fiction.
Where it applies
Literature at every level.
How it works
Genre sets expectations that a writer can meet or break, and breaking them is meaningful. A comedy that ends unhappily is making a point about comedy.
How to use it in your work
Name the genre and one convention, then ask whether the text conforms.
Hybrid texts are common and interesting — a Gothic novel that is also a detective story is doing something with both.
