What it is
Free indirect discourse reports a character's thoughts in third person and past tense but in their own idiom, without quotation marks or 'she thought'.
Where it applies
Prose fiction, especially nineteenth-century novels; a higher-level point.
How it works
It blurs narrator and character, so the reader is inside a viewpoint without being told they are there. That makes irony possible: the reader can see round a character while sharing their words.
How to use it in your work
Spot the shift in register mid-paragraph — that is usually where it starts.
Say what it does: sympathy, irony, or both at once. It is one of the strongest points available on a prose text.
