Quadrats and transects: measuring what lives where.
Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.
What it is
A quadrat is a frame placed to sample abundance in an area. A transect is a line along which samples are taken at intervals to study change across a gradient.
Where it applies
GCSE biology and combined science, with a required practical, and geography.
How it works
Random placement avoids bias when estimating abundance across a uniform area; a transect is used deliberately where you expect systematic change, such as up a beach.
Estimating a population means scaling the mean count per quadrat to the whole area.
How to use it in your work
Say HOW you randomised — random number tables or coordinates — because 'randomly' alone is not a method.
For population estimates, show the scaling calculation.
Give a limitation: quadrat size, number of samples, or the assumption that the sampled area is representative.
Where to get help
Your teacher and your board's specification and mark scheme.
Revise this with a song
These are ours. We write revision songs because a lot of people remember a tune when they cannot remember a page, and because revising out loud in the kitchen beats staring at a highlighter.
