Deadlines and planning work

Getting work in on time. A skill, and a large share of coursework marks.

Please note: This page explains a word or a process in education. It is general information about the system, the law and the guidance in England — not advice about your child, your school or your exam. If a decision is going against you, get advice from one of the free services we link to before you agree to anything or miss a deadline. If you are revising, check your own exam board's specification: boards word things differently and yours is the one that marks you.

What it is

Managing deadlines means breaking a task into stages, allocating time and building in slack.

Where it applies

Coursework, EPQ, BTEC assignments and homework across every subject.

How it works

Coursework deadlines set by centres are effectively final — boards impose their own submission dates and extensions are limited to defined circumstances.

Work expands to fill the time, so an interim deadline is usually more useful than a final one.

How to use it in your work

Work backwards from the deadline and set your own dates for each stage, ending a week early.

Submit something rather than nothing. A partial submission scores; a missing one does not.

If illness or circumstances will make a deadline impossible, tell your teacher BEFORE it passes — the options afterwards are far narrower.

Where to get help

Your teacher and your board's specification and mark scheme.
